The dictionary definition of biofuel is “a fuel derived from living matter”. The sugar can be fermented into alcohol, and the starch can be converted to sugar which is then afterwards fermented into alcohol. The alcohol is burned, like petrol, to create an ignition in the engine. A litre of ethanol contains about 2/3 of the energy of a litre of petroleum.
Some diesel engines can be run on biodiesel, which can be made from vegetable oils, animal fats, or even leftover cooking oils from restaurants and meat processing facilities.
Biofuels produce less greenhouse gasses when they are burned, and unlike fossil fuels like petrol or diesel, as they are produced using new plants, in the process of developing the fuel some of the carbon dioxide is extracted from the atmosphere in the process of photosynthesis.
Biofuels are better for your engine than petrol. Often the two are mixed together to produce cleaner fuels, and they produce fewer emissions when burned. Your engine will run for longer and require less maintenance and using biofuels will also bring down the overall pollution check costs. As demand for biofuels rises, the cost is predicted to also fall, meaning eventually it is possible it will be cheaper per the kilometre to use biofuel over petrol.
Biofuel is renewable, and so when oil and gas reserves run dry, we will always be able to produce more biofuel. Although not completely green, biofuel is renewable and sustainable making it more effective in the long term than petrol, diesel and natural gas. For counties without reserves or crude oil, reducing their dependancy on fossil fuels and increasing their consumption of biofuels means more jobs will be created and will make their economies more secure.
Biofuel is expensive to produce, however if demand increases this is likely to decrease production costs. There are also concerns over farmers having to produce the same crop year after year and depriving their soil of certain nutrients. There is also a higher dependency on the use of fertilisers in the production of biofuel which can cause pollution to the immediate surroundings of the crop, especially water pollution.

Obviously the automobile has been designed with one intent in mind - to transport people or cargo from one point to another, however, as a tool, the humble car has been used in many ways since it's invention other than this. Here are just a few examples of how vehicles have been used in more ways than just moving people.

This goes to show that with a little imagination, incredibly unique and creative ideas can come from every day objects.

Mike Wang, who is the CEO of Quadrobot, has introduced something very extraordinary. He has launched a four-wheel automobile that is operated electrically and is designed for delivery service in the urban neighborhoods. The company is based in the Detroit area and is funded by United States and China. At the beginning these trucks will be operated by drivers. The trucks are called Quadrobot U1. The automobile has a windshield, a driver's seat and some controls. For safety measures, an autonomous system will overlook the driver. This will help the company know if the automobile takes a turn too fast or the driver takes a wrong turn.

The Quadrobot U1, a four-wheel-drive electric delivery van that has 35 kilowatts of power, about 47 horsepower and can travel up to 200 miles on a single charge. Quadrobot, a company headed by Hangzhou native Mike Tianye Wang, expects to deploy 2,000 of the vehicles in China and the US this year. The race to market automated delivery vehicles is heating up, and a company started by a Chinese native is poised to be a disrupter of the way goods and services are transported worldwide. Shipping giant FedEx Corp this week unveiled an automated delivery robot that the company hopes will be transporting packages to various locations soon. Closely observing this was Mike Tianye Wang, the CEO of Quadrobot, a company in suburban Detroit that by the end of this year will deploy about 2,000 electrically powered, self-driving delivery vans in China and the US. In China, the boxy vehicles will deliver the mail, while in metro Detroit, the vehicles will pickup and deliver packages.
The Quadrobot U1 will be able to trail its operator down while an attendant will handle the package pickup and delivery. This new invention will ease the delivery service in China. An editorial director, Bill Visnic explained in a magazine that the Last mile solutions are critical for urban areas as the traffic congestion makes it time consuming and labor intensive. He further added, that this service will get easier by using the Quadrobot U1 as the trips will be on defined and easily mapped routes. The fascinating automobile can be designed in many other types and for many different purposes like passenger cabs, food wagons, mobile libraries and many other. Mike Wang emphasis on the importance of its flexible design and declare it to be a very useful means of transport. He says it could be used as a carrier of human, material, information or even capital flows.
The company plans to send 2000 of these vehicles to China for testing. The vehicles are set to carry out package deliveries in the south of China. Whereas, 30 of these vehicles are planned for tests in Michigan. John Manoogian stated in relevance to the Quadrobots that the car business was undergoing a dramatic change and this opportunity would make a big difference to it.
Quadrobot' s designing and manufacturing has been taken place in Michigan mostly. The automobile is powered with 35 Kilowatts, which is about 47 horsepower. The CEO has worked with the local engineers to develop this innovative vehicle. Not to forget, that Detroit is one of the best in the world for its automotive engineering and designing. However, the vehicle is more like a mail truck but is smaller in size. The automobile is of course not a replacement for highway and intercity delivery vehicles but can be used as a delivery vehicle for local businesses.
Wang, the CEO of Quadrobot U1, sees this automobile as a mobile locker that can drop off objects for people. It could also be used as house vending machines that could also deliver freshly cooked food around town for easy pickup at the end of the day. The vehicle charges on lithium-ion-batteries. It is working with a supplier on fast charge 300-volt system. This could deliver a 12-hour delivery in 40 minutes.
The U1 fascinates the automobile makers and opens windows for more innovative ideas in the world of automobiles.

British Racing Green

Since the very early 1900s, many British cars have adapted a dark green shade known as British Racing Green, or BRG for short. It began when it was suggested that each national entrant in the Gordon Bennet Cup was allocated a unique colour to distinguish the teams from one another, and when Britain first entered the race in 1902 the obvious colours of blue, white and red that correspond with the British flag had been respectively taken by other countries (America, Germany and France).


At the time, motor racing was considered more of a competition between countries instead of a competition between different car manufacturers and drivers. The cars used in thew Gordon Bennet Cup races had to be composed of elements manufactured entirely within their home countries and each car (limited to three entries per a country) had to carry both a driver and mechanic at all times. The cup began in the year 1900, with France winning the initial race. The winning team of the previous year would host the next race, however although the British team won in 1902, local laws meant that motor racing was illegal in Britain at the time and so the race was hosted in Ireland instead.


The first cars to officially feature the green colour were the English Napier cars used in the Gordon Bennett Cup races, manufactured by D. Napier & Son Limited. The driver of the winning Napier car in the 1902 race was Selwyn Edge.


In 1903 the race was to be held in Ireland, and out of respect for the hosts the English cars were painted in a shamrock green. This meant that before British Racing Green as we know it today existed, it was officially a lighter hue more similar to an emerald green, however over time darker shades of green became more and more popular. The exact hue of British Racing Green is still debated over today, however it tends to cover a large spectrum of deeper greens. Colours have ranged from a very light lime green right down to an almost black seen on a Bently, still labelled under the British Racing Green colour.


The colour has been seen on many successful British racing cars from the Sunbeams that won the 1912 Coupe de l'Auto as well as on the cars in the British team that won the European Grand Epreuves Grand Prix in 1923 and 1924. It was also featured frequently on Bently cars in the 1920s that had a high success in the 24 hour races at Le Mans.


It's usage began to phase out in the 1960s were rules regarding racing colours in the Formula One races were relaxed and sponsorship paint jobs became more popular, although it did briefly make a comeback between 2000 and 2004 when the Jaguar F1 team cordoned the colours for their vehicles. There have also been a number of British car manufacturers that have released models in the traditional racing colours including Lotus, Jaguar, MG, Rolls Royce and even the Mini Cooper.

Specific point access - Public transport can only take you so far, and in cities, this is not so much a problem, but when you want to access national parks and walking trails and places further from the beaten path, it is often extremely difficult, if not impossible to access these places using public transport unless you pay for a taxi as well.


Economic - okay, overall public transport can be considered cheaper when you consider the cost of fuel, tax, maintenance, insurance and the initial cost of the car, but there are a number of ways you can win back some of those hard earned dollars with your car. Ride sharing apps not only reduce your carbon footprint, they can also offset the cost of your fuel as riders pay for your empty seats. You can also create a car pool to and from work.


Weather - your car is a nice warm and cosy haven that blocks out the outside world and optimises your immediate atmosphere. Walking to and from points of public transport can expose to rain, snow, wind, hail, colder temperatures and a whole number of unpleasant experiences. Arriving to work in your car ensures you are dry and looking optimal, however a quick walk in the rain could leave you damp and dripping all afternoon behind your desk.


Emotional - who doesn't love a good drive to your favourite playlist? A number of people find driving very cathartic and, traffic and conditions reliant, it can be very stress relieving.
